One of the things I'm learning recently is that development is only half the battle. The amazing thing about rails is that they made development such a joy that it's easy to forget that deployment is a whole other issue that needs to be dealt with. Especially hard when you're on a shared host.
Going live with a rails app is an entirely different issue and I recommend newbies to get capistrano & whatever server configuration set up as soon as possible so you know what is involved.
One nice thing of late is thatnginx turns out to be a much more robust solution than hinted and may be a sane solution for rails deployment that delivers on the elusive promise of Lighttpd.

Obviously, this thing is powering 90k domains on the internet with benchmarks showing that it handles more requests per second (as high as 900+ on a single machine) than any other set up. I know that one benchmark doesn't form substantial evidence but I think nginx will be something to pay attention to in the future (especially for shared hosts that can get taken down by rogue rails apps).
So basically, now that I'm on Rimuhosting I want to do things like the cool kids. Never mind the fact that I don't have a rails app worth deploying!
One thing holding nginx back has to be the lack of documentation, but this is almost remedied by the ever-growing English wiki. Also the set up is quite straight forward with sane configuration files and a lean, clear code base.
I basically use Ezra's method to compile the library from source (be sure to use the latest -- as it is still under heavy development) as well as a variation of his conf file.
This is the command I use to compile nginx source.
./configure --sbin-path=/usr/local/sbin --with-http_ssl_module --user=root
make && make install
It's that simple.
You do have to turn off Apache or whatever else you use. Nginx can be used for virtual hosts just like Apache. The only thing lacking with Nginx is CGI support but this is easily remedied with FCGI wrappers around CGI (there are sample files in the google-sphere). I'm on Fedora Core 5.
/etc/init.d/some_program stop
chkconfig --level 345 some_program off
Using variations of that should turn off whatever is getting in the way of nginx taking over port 80 to serve your web app.
Getting nginx to start up with a reboot required some help. I found something that I coaxed into working from a Russian LiveJournal blog. That's how sketchy documentation is.

I put that in my /etc/init.d and then turned the service on for the next reboot: chkconfig --level 345 nginx on
The thing that tripped me up and obviously other people using Rimuhosting for mongrel clusters is the fact that some paths aren't loaded on start up. Hence, mongrel doesn't get the same love just doing a chkconfig. Luckily, the fix was very simple. Follow Coda Hale's instructions to get mongrel cluster set up properly.
service mongrel_cluster start
I simply moved my mongrel_cluster_ctl & mongrel_rails executables into /sbin and all was well. See the thread here.
You can swap out nginx conf files on the fly without losing any requests. Really all kinds of stuff you can do.
Now I need to figure out how to set the rewrite rules to prevent my app from throwing errors and such. Might post about it if I figure it out.
Hopefully, we'll see more adopters of nginx and get more informative posts about using it in production mode.
